No, it's not a movie script...

…but it might have been. Lovely hotel that was mostly deserted (off-season); the same slightly odd man hoping to sell us lobster several times per day; lashing rain; bridge collapsing.

Thankfully, we were not a group of teenagers stuck in an obvious plot where the slightly-dim character saw the obvious route of escape while everyone else was dissected in their beds. We were a perfectly charming couple from Northern Ireland who said to our hostess: “Can you order us a taxi for tomorrow morning please?”

The rest of the conversation went something like this:
“No – the road is closed!”
“Pardon?!!”
“Because of the very heavy rain, the temporary bridge that was in place for the roadworks while they replace the permanent bridge, washed away. The local TV company have been interviewing people and they are all very angry. But if they cannot fix it, there's a canoe.”
“A canoe?”
“Yes, we will drive you to the river and someone will canoe you across to a taxi on the other side.”

So slightly bewildered, we got on with our reading and looking out to the (stormy) sea!

NB – the problem of engineers not allowing for unexpected very heavy rain, in a country where everyone knows to expect very heavy rain, is not a new one. Does anyone remember Belfast's lovely new multi-million pound motorway underpass flooding not so long ago?!
