I don't know what you have in mind when you think of meeting High Commissioners and diplomatic staff. My impressions were decided by Bond movies and TV adverts for Ferrero Rocher: black ties; waltzes; espionage; Eton old-boys who talk a language the rest of us don't understand. On the contrary, the Deputy High Commissioner and his wife (Tim and Jo) seemed like very nice, down-to-earth people. Tim's background was with Tearfund as a disaster-relief engineer, before experience negotiating with officials in various countries led him to work for the Foreign & Commonwealth Office. Dress was casual, the evening relaxed and the grilled fish was massive. Huge, it was. The size of the ones that anglers back home claim to have let get away.
We completely forgot to find out if anyone knew how to get hold of 'proper' sausages though!
